How to fix clay soil in Utah

The Salt Lake Valley's native soil is dense, alkaline clay that drains poorly and compacts hard — here's what actually improves it for lawn, planting beds, and drainage.

Most of the Salt Lake Valley sits on dense, alkaline clay soil. Clay holds water rather than letting it drain through, compacts hard under foot traffic and equipment, and doesn't give plant roots much room to spread — which is behind a lot of the 'my new lawn/trees/shrubs aren't thriving' calls we get.

What doesn't work

Adding sand to clay soil is a common but bad idea — in the wrong ratio it can actually make the soil harder, closer to a concrete-like mix, instead of improving drainage. Simply laying sod or planting directly into unamended clay without addressing the soil first is the other common shortcut that leads to poor establishment.

What actually helps

Working organic matter — compost, in particular — into the top several inches of soil improves structure, drainage, and root penetration over time. For new lawn or planting bed installation, that amendment happens before anything goes in the ground, not after something's already struggling. For drainage specifically, correcting grade (so water moves away from problem areas rather than sitting on top of dense clay) often matters as much as the soil amendment itself.

When it's a bigger problem

If clay soil is causing standing water, a damp basement or crawlspace, or a spot that never dries out, that's usually a grading and drainage issue on top of the soil issue — surface amendment alone won't fix water with nowhere to go. That's when a French drain, area drain, or regrading is the actual fix, not more compost.
