What's included
A paver driveway uses the same interlocking-paver system as a patio, but built on a deeper, more heavily compacted base engineered specifically for vehicle loads rather than foot traffic.
You get a lot more design flexibility than concrete — borders, patterns, color blends — and if a section ever needs work, individual pavers can be lifted and replaced without redoing the whole driveway.
The base is where a paver driveway earns its durability: 8–10 inches of compacted road base (versus 4–6 for a patio), placed and compacted in lifts, topped with the same 1-inch sand bedding layer. We use thicker, vehicular-rated pavers (60mm or more, versus roughly 40mm for a patio) and pay extra attention to edge restraint, since a driveway's edges take lateral load every time a vehicle turns in or out — restraint that's adequate on a patio isn't automatically adequate on a driveway, and we spec it accordingly.
How it works
Step by step, here's what actually happens on site:
- 1Excavate deeper than a patio — 10–13" below grade depending on your soil
- 2Compact aggregate base in lifts to a full 8–12" total depth, built to vehicular spec
- 3Use vehicular-rated pavers — 60mm or thicker, versus roughly 40mm for a patio
- 4Install heavier-duty edge restraint sized to resist the lateral load of turning vehicles
- 5Lay, compact, and joint the pavers using the same technique as a patio, just built to the heavier driveway spec throughout
Why Ironwood
Vehicle-load base prep is a different spec than a patio, and we build to it — this is where an under-built paver driveway fails, and it's the step we don't shortcut.
We plan slope and drainage the same way we would for a concrete driveway, so water sheds away from your garage and foundation.
We use vehicular-rated pavers and driveway-spec edge restraint, not patio-grade materials installed on a wider base and called a driveway.
