What's included

A new or replacement concrete driveway, built with the base depth, reinforcement, and slope needed to handle vehicle weight and Utah's freeze-thaw cycles without heaving or cracking prematurely.

We plan slope and drainage so runoff moves away from your garage and foundation, and we can match or set expansion joints, borders, or a broom or exposed finish based on what fits your home.

Because a driveway carries vehicle load instead of just foot traffic, it gets built heavier than a patio at every step: 6–8 inches of compacted road base instead of 4–6, a slab poured at a minimum of 6 inches thick (vs. 4 for a patio), and rebar or wire mesh sized for the extra load. We set expansion joint material anywhere the new concrete meets an existing structure — the garage slab, a sidewalk, the street approach — so seasonal movement doesn't crack the driveway itself, and we cut control joints at regular intervals for the same reason we do on patios: telling the slab exactly where to relieve stress as it cures.

How it works

Step by step, here's what actually happens on site:

  1. 1Clear the area and excavate to a clean, uniformly compacted subgrade — uniformity is what prevents settling later
  2. 2Add 6–8" of compacted gravel or road-base aggregate
  3. 3Set forms and install expansion joint material anywhere the new pour meets an existing structure (garage slab, sidewalk)
  4. 4Place rebar in a grid roughly 12" on-center (or wire mesh for thinner sections), suspended on chairs at mid-depth
  5. 5Pour a minimum 6" slab — thicker than a patio because it has to carry vehicle load
  6. 6Finish (broom or exposed) and cut control joints
  7. 7Cure moist for at least 7 days; keep heavy vehicles off for the full 28-day cure

Why Ironwood

Driveways take more load and more freeze-thaw stress than any other concrete surface on your property — we don't shortcut sub-base compaction or rebar/wire mesh reinforcement here.

We coordinate the pour around your schedule (single driveway, no other access) and protect surrounding landscaping and hardscape during demo and construction.

We build driveway base to vehicle-load spec, not patio spec — the extra base depth and reinforcement is exactly why a properly built driveway doesn't develop the alligator cracking you see on underbuilt ones after a few winters.

Concrete driveway installation FAQ

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

Residential driveways generally need greater thickness and reinforcement than a patio to handle vehicle loads — we'll spec this correctly based on your vehicles and site conditions.

Can you remove my old cracked driveway and replace it?

Yes, demo and haul-away of the existing driveway is part of the scope.

How long until I can park on a new driveway?

Light traffic is typically fine after about a week; we'll give you exact timing based on weather and mix at the time of your pour.
